High Blood Pressure - The Silent Killer

Raised blood pressure ( or hypertension as described by doctors) remains one of the most common causes of disease, disability ( through heart attack and stroke) and death ( kills more people than all forms of cancer )  in Ireland .

Here are some figures about the prevalence of blood pressure .

Approx 25% of people in all age groups have blood pressure . The majority don’t know about it as it’s a silent disease – it has no symptoms .

                40% of 45-64 year olds

                64% of 65-75 year olds .

THESE ARE HUGE FIGURES . BLOOD PRESSURE IS LIKE A SILENT TIME BOMB IN THE COMMUNITY .

One of the big problems in identifying patients with blood pressure is that it causes no symptoms. Therefore the only way of knowing you have blood pressure and having it fully assessed is by making a “  cold call” to your GP .
